Background of the Study

Alcohol consumption is widely recognized as a major risk factor for liver diseases, including alcoholic liver disease (ALD), cirrhosis, and liver cancer. In Nigeria, alcohol use is prevalent, and studies indicate a strong association between excessive alcohol consumption and the development of liver diseases. Plateau State, with its growing urban population and increasing access to alcohol, is no exception to this public health challenge. Despite the known risks, cultural acceptance and social factors continue to drive alcohol consumption, often leading to liver complications. This study seeks to assess the impact of alcohol consumption on liver disease prevalence in Plateau State, focusing on the patterns of alcohol use, its contribution to liver disease, and potential public health strategies to mitigate its effects.

Statement of the Problem

Liver disease, especially those associated with alcohol consumption, is a significant health issue in Plateau State. Alcohol abuse is a primary cause of liver-related diseases, yet public health interventions remain inadequate. Although some studies have explored alcohol consumption and liver disease in other parts of Nigeria, there is limited research specific to Plateau State. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and liver disease prevalence in the state, with a focus on identifying contributing factors and suggesting appropriate public health strategies.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the relationship between alcohol consumption and the prevalence of liver disease in Plateau State.
  2. To identify patterns of alcohol consumption that contribute to the development of liver disease in Plateau State.
  3. To evaluate public awareness of the link between alcohol consumption and liver disease in Plateau State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the common patterns of alcohol consumption in Plateau State, and how do they contribute to liver disease?
  2. How does alcohol consumption impact the prevalence of liver diseases in Plateau State?
  3. What is the level of public awareness regarding the dangers of alcohol consumption and its association with liver disease in Plateau State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. High levels of alcohol consumption are significantly associated with an increased prevalence of liver diseases in Plateau State.
  2. Excessive alcohol consumption contributes directly to the development of liver-related diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer.
  3. Public awareness about the link between alcohol consumption and liver disease is low in Plateau State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adults in both urban and rural areas of Plateau State. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining reliable data on alcohol consumption and self-reported health conditions related to liver disease.

Definitions of Terms

  • Alcohol Consumption: The act of drinking alcoholic beverages, especially in significant quantities.
  • Liver Disease: Diseases that affect the liver, such as alcoholic liver disease (ALD), cirrhosis, and liver cancer.
  • Cirrhosis: A condition where the liver becomes severely scarred, often caused by chronic alcohol use.
